Legion of Merit

After abandoning Mihailovic to his fate, the US recognised its mistake in allowing Communist regime to be installed in Yugoslavia. General Mihailovic was posthumously decorated for his war efforts by President Truman.

General Mihailovic organises the armed resistance in Nazi-occupied Serbia by May 1941. This is the first guerilla force fighting against the Germans in bleak early days of WWII.

The Chetniks soon grew into formidable force that Germans could not defeat throughout the war. Mihailovic at one point had 100,000 men under arms and 400,000 in the reserve.

Throughout the war, Mihailovic continued to harass the Germans, waiting for the Allied arms that never came and went to Communists in the end.

In 1944, Mihailovic forces evacuated about 500 airmen shot down over Serbia while bombing Nazi targets. In the picture, Draza with saved American crew.
